With the hot summer weather we're currently experiencing, it's no surprise that we're receiving calls from customers reporting that the refrigeration unit in their vending machine isn't cooling products properly or, in some cases, has failed altogether.
"Why has this happened just when we need it most?" is a question we hear regularly, closely followed by, "How soon can you get here to fix it?"
Most of the time the issue is simply caused by the heat at the location and the fridge is struggling to work. Many times its a simple case of switching of the machine and allowing the fridge to cool externally for a short period, like a pc switch it off and back on and miraculously its all working.
Yes, i know that all sounds strange but to understand the answer, it's helpful to know how a fridge actually works. Contrary to popular belief, fridges don't create cold – they remove heat from inside the cabinet from the items stored internally..
I know that sounds a little strange, but Hannah Fry explains it brilliantly in the BBC programme The Secret Genius of Modern Life. The programme explores the science behind refrigeration and why modern fridges are such remarkable pieces of engineering.
In simple terms, the refrigeration system uses a refrigerant that absorbs heat from inside the cabinet and releases it outside. During periods of very hot weather, the refrigerant can struggle to cool back down from a gas into a liquid. This process is essential for the refrigeration cycle to continue, so when ambient temperatures rise significantly, the system has to work much harder to keep products cold.
So, what can we do to help?
While we can't control the weather, there are several things we can do to help the refrigeration unit operate as efficiently as possible:
1. Ensure good airflow around the machine
Check that the vending machine isn't pushed tightly against a wall or surrounded by furniture and other equipment. Adequate airflow allows the refrigeration system to remove heat more effectively.
2. Check and clean the filters
Dirty or blocked filters restrict airflow, forcing the refrigeration unit to work harder and reducing its efficiency. Regular cleaning can make a significant difference, especially during warmer months.
3. Review the temperature setting
Ask yourself whether the machine really needs to be set as cold as it currently is. Increasing the temperature slightly can reduce the workload on the refrigeration system while still keeping products at an acceptable temperature.
A little preventative maintenance and attention to airflow can often help avoid breakdowns and keep your vending machine performing reliably throughout the summer months.
